Astronomy: Mars is the fourth planet out from the Sun in our solar system. Mars can be identified by the reddish light it reflects, giving it the nickname of the “red planet.”

Mars is the polarity planet to Venus; it represents the male dynamic in your psyche, while Venus relates to the feminine dynamic. Mars is how you take action, assert yourself, act on your desires, defend yourself when necessary, and express your anger and frustration. It is your inner warrior and how you stand up for yourself. While Venus is drawn to the romance of a relationship, Mars is the raw, primal desire that fuels sexuality.
The issue of looking at Venus and Mars differently for men and women is somewhat helpful, but part of the archaic language of astrology limits us to their culturally imposed gender identities. We all have a Mars and we all have a Venus, and the more a person individuates, becoming their own person and claiming their own planets, the less these forces get projected onto others.
As was said in the Venus section, Mars tends to be expressed differently for men than for women. In a man’s chart, Mars is how he is most comfortable asserting his male identity, while in a women’s chart, Mars represents the type of assertive and passionate partner who would meet her desires.
Mars is aptly named after the god of war and is known as the “warrior planet.” Although this image is a bit harsh, Mars can be quite warrior-like in the heat of an argument or during intense competition. Mars represents your personal power, will, strength, and drive, and its energy can turn hot, volatile, and aggressive when blocked or challenged. It shows how you deal with this volatile energy, which can be felt directly in your solar plexus when you are angry. Whether you deal with it inwardly or outwardly—whether as anger or as productive drive—is up to you and your free will. At its best, Mars gives strength and courage to act according to your best interest, but when uncontrolled it leads to anger, frustration, and even violent outbursts of rage.
Mars is the ruling planet of Aries and shows how you initiate action according to your own perceived best interest.
